iPad’s product cycle discussion

Hey readers, I wanted to open this post up to talking about the iPad's product cycle. It seems to me that instead of launching new versions and keeping the old ones on shelves, they are simply going to replace the product with the new updated one. This means no price increase, just a tech upgrade each iteration. I think that this will wind up being a great thing for Apple in the long run because it keeps the iPad from being overstocked in different SKU's. It almost feels like you are buying into a chain of products instead of just one piece. This helps with branding and to avoid marketing confusion when people come into the store. They do not have to worry about comparing the two different versions and deciding what is better for their money, instead they simply get to see the newest that is available.

The downside I see if people wanted to not become early adopters. The people who usually bargain hunt apple products by waiting a generation are really not going to be happy with this move. They will be pushed back to the aftermarket of buying a used iPad from a previous owner. While Apple shouldn't have to cater to these people, they should also be aware that there is a big percentage of them due to the high prices that the products carry.

This post isn't really to tell  you my opinion, but instead its a open forum for everyone to talk about what they think about this product development cycle.

Google Instant’s impact on Advertising

In case you havent seen the news, google released its new search protocol called "Instant" last week. This new tool searches as you type into the search bar. This allows you to see results in real time for what you are typing. While this helps users find what they are looking for faster, many companies have been speculating what this could do to thier paid for ads.
Google quickly responded to this speculation with a post on their adwords blog. They tell the companies that they will only pay for the ads that are displayed at the final search, and not the searches that go on while typing. After reading the new guidelines on how companies will pay for the new ad structure, I see a great benefit arising on advertising with Google.

Instant will allow companies to get ad impressions without paying for them as the user types in a search. This will allow a greater visibility per dollar spent on advertising within Google.  I believe that this new format for Google ads will bring new business to google because companies will like to exploit the free impressions.

Startup Weekend and state of work

Hey everyone,

I'm back at Dallas' startup weekend. We have new companies as well as old ones returning to this event. One of the most promising new ones in my mind is To Long Didn't Read, a website that crowd-sources the translation of long documents to layman's terms. The case study that the presenter used was that everyone is arguing about the health care bill, but very few have actually read it.

I have also been working on thegamemeter.com, the video game review site that me and my friend have started. Its been slow since I have not had the time to play games as much as I would like, but over the summer I feel like this will really take off. I am also pushing myself to take more videos for my sites. I would love to do some video podcast for the game site, as well as personal ones for my blog.

How weather is like social media

Hey everyone, in case you haven't noticed the weather has been crazy around the country, especially Dallas. It got me to thinking how the quick changes of pace and requirements for the weather reminded me of social media. We have to constantly check the news, see what we have to do for the upcoming week, and adjust our schedule to fit that. If you treat your social media habits like you treat the weather, you will be seen as a much more adaptable person and blogger.

If you wear only one outfit no matter what the weather, you are sure to have terrible days. Say you always wear shorts and a shirt, you will have great sunny days, but rain and cold will make you miserable. Same goes for if you always wear a jacket and jeans. This same approach can be used for blogging. You do not need to follow a rigid structure for your blog and ignore what outside forces are affecting you; instead adapt and make the best of the situations. If you are in a happy mood let that show in your posts, do not suppress that just so you can write a informative post that is fact laden and does not show your inner self. Also, if you are on twitter and are feeling bad, do not fake happiness. People can see through this and may get the feeling that you are being fake and that you are not trusting them with your true thoughts and feelings.

I really like this metaphor and would love some help fleshing it out. If you have thoughts on it I would love to read about them in the comments.

SXSW day one impressions

So I have just woken up from my first day and night of SXSW, and it was an interesting one. Me and my friend Michael originally came to Austin for the live Diggnation saturday night. We were going to just see what could happen on friday. Austin has an amazing feeling to its downtown area. We were perfectly content just walking around and seeing all the places in the city. Gowalla kept us entertained by finding the "Stairs of Doom", six oddly placed stair cases around the city, and we also tried some new places to eat. Once it hit around 8 we decided to look for one of the famous SXSW parties. The first few attempts lead to overcrowded bars that were either 21+ or required an interactive badge to get in. We then saw that Ning was having a RV drive around with karaoke on it. after three tweets about its location, we finally managed to get on. We met some cool people who also couldn't find the RV and managed to run after it after we spotted it just driving. The RV was defiantly interesting and unique, and I feel it was a very appropriate party to start my time in Austin. I will post some pictures and more stories to come.

Current State of Projects

Hey readers,

I wanted to give everyone a status update on my projects that I'm working on and how they are shaping up.I know that I constantly update twitter with new projects and websites so I have decided to centralize these into blog post.

Meetupsports and Proxomo are coming along just fine. The engineers and coders are working hard on getting the alpha ready and they are showing some real progress. We are currently working with a graphic designer and getting the layout of the web application. I have also started a video game website with my friend Curtis called thegamemeter.com. We hope to get reviews on it and launch it by the end of the weekend. This site has taken a lot of my time over the last week, but I really want to have a venue for my video game passion. The third site that I have worked on this week is dreambigsoccer.com. This is my volunteer organization that works to help elementary school students experience field day. I have been helping my friends gather volunteers and funds to throw this soccer camp for over three hundred kids.

College Social Media Campaigns

I have been observing SMU's groups and how they have used social media to get their message heard. College is a great time to use social media as a tool because almost everyone has at least facebook. Most organizations on campus use facebook groups and email chains to tell their members about meetings and events happening. Another group I have seen that is gaining traction is the TOMS group for SMU.

This group is rapidly gaining members because TOMS has found a niche and vision that college students can be a part of. The shoes that you buy are a unique stlye and are easily recognized. These shoes show that you have given to someone else because everyone knows TOMS 1 for 1 message, where for every pair of shoes bought, they give another pair to a child in need. The TOMS group has decided to set up an event called " A Day without shoes". This event will have members walk around campus without shoes to see what children have to go through every day. A event like this is much like a hunger banquet, but done it a much more public way. These factors lead to a high participation level and can really get a message across the SMU campus.

Another group aiming for the same success is "Dream Big Soccer".  Dream Big is asking for volunteers to help bring back "Field Day" to the students of elementary schools in Dallas. Communities like Heart House and Vickery Meadows need help with these events because they cannot fund them themselves. Brad Namdar, the leader of Dream Big, has a passion for soccer and believes that this event could really help the kids. Not only are they getting soccer training, but they get to interact with college students.  Dream Big has a facebook group as well as a website where you can sign up to volunteer or donate money to the cause.

These are a few examples of how social media is being used effectively by college organizations. I will continue to observe and document how college groups are using these tools and how they can improve. If any groups need some help starting a social media campaign feel free to email me or leave a comment.

Starting a Social Media consulting firm

I am starting a new small business that will help business and people interact with others on the Internet. I have been helping people start blogs and social media campaigns during my first semester at SMU and have decided to start keeping a portfolio and start branding myself more professionally. I am looking for help with designing my new website, along with agents to help on projects. You can reach me on twitter/facebook or email.
